Brendan Howey Video - Blood, Sweat and Beers

‘’The goal for the video was to spend eight days in a clearcut; building, camping when we needed to and shooting all the lines we could create. My goal personally was to step up the production value from past edits. I know Brendan wanted to build things that could showcase his riding and I think we achieved our goals and then some.’’ – Aaron Larocque

It was 8:13pm on Saturday, August 20th and as we slowly made our way back to the truck, one bleary-eyed stare confirmed what I felt myself – we were exhausted. Trudging back with me are rider Brendan Howey, videographer Aaron Larocque, and photographer Mike Zinger. It was, without question, the most digging we’d ever done in one week and our collective bodies were mangled. The patchwork of cuts running up both shins and engraved on my arms were a testament to the hard-work put in over the week.

Horns and style

‘’With a project like this you’re free to do as you please, no restrictions, and no pressure. It’s definitely something I’d like to see more of and I’m sure many would agree. We need to see riders in their natural environment, being creative, rather then conforming to contests, points, and politics. ‘’ –Mike Zinger

Pipe steez

Blood, sweat, and beer are three things that go hand-in-hand with mountain biking and they pretty much sum up the week we spent on this project. After seven days of digging our hands are battle-hardened and rough from calluses, exposed skin is fried to a crispy golden-brown, and we wake up tasting dirt. Online viewers seldom see the effort that goes into getting just one shot: from fog cancelling a 5:00am sunrise shoot (after we’d already set up at 4:30am), to high speed winds, or clouds obscuring what should have been a perfect sunset; it can be a battle just to capture one three second clip. Despite the long hours and omnipresent heat, all it took was one shot in the can to re-stoke the fires of motivation. Phillips Brewery was the trip MVP as bottles of Blue Buck were crushed like water every evening as s’mores roasted on the campfire.

Texture

‘’I came to the Island to do this video, basically the idea was to shoot lines that are original, and fun to ride, and awesome to shoot.’’ -Brendan Howey

Aaron making magic while Secco holds the crane.

Creativity is one of the things that first drew me to mountain biking; the breadth of terrain that can be ridden is unmatched in virtually every other sport. Turning the mundane into the ride-able is an art form unto itself and these days we’re lucky enough to have progressive trail building going on in more countries than ever. We tried to bring a unique look to our builds too and hopefully it paid off. While there’s no doubt this won’t be the last project with Howey, it’ll definitely be hard to top. That’s part of the fun though, and when one adventure ends it’s time to start planning another. What’s next?

Pooched.

Way to break the Pinkbike edit trend of dance/dubstep. I love dubstep but it just doesn't fit every edit. Sick shots...if there were some cable cams through the field and more panning shots, the edit would be so pro.

I was stoked to see the trials being built but when he started riding I saw how dead everything looked which made me sad.
Cutting down excessive trees at one time is not so good but, making a wicked place to ride is awesome.
I love the video and of course the story it portrayed.
Jimmy made me day too!!!

Great video!

I was sad to see nature in its lowest moment.
Desolate and dry with all the sap sucked out of it!

I undersand the process of life and good time mate!
Take it easy.
The opening scene was filled with this oxymoronic feeling.
Good rides mixed with the death of life!

Its just my perception and in the same sentence I said its awesome to take a barren land and turn it into a FR master piece.

I too build trials and seeing the clearcut here in Japan as well is devastating.
The land under the trees turns to dry bug infested wasteland until the new saplings start to flourish which takes about 4-6 years after the cut!

The story and the video was priceless.
I loved it!
RideOn!

I just bought myself an absolut sx and I bloody love it. I've owned a supreme, absolut hardtail, meta 4x and now my new beast. Keeping it single speed is amazing in terms of shutting up all the annoying rattles and chain slap you normally get- it goes through packs as well as the meta despite being an extra 40mm of travel. Commencal's are super nice- if I rode this trail on my bike they'd cut out all of Howies footage and just show me!!! Tee hee

Yeap. Its a pity. It is a nice video but they couldn't found an ugliest place to ride: A forest clear-cut, one of the nastiest logging practices around. Pity for those trees.

flag larock Plus (Aug 29, 2011 at 9:56)
We agree, these clearcuts are ugly as sin and a horrible practise but they're a fact of life up here in BC. We wanted to shoot here to show how you can create something out of nothing. Not to mention we don't need to feel guilty about building things through pristine forest.

And you did and excelent job at it, man!!. Don't get me wrong. The video is awesome!!. It just made me feel very sad to watch the clearcut & remember all the thousands of square miles of forest that are being cut right now all over the planet. I just prefer to watch riding in forested places as opossite to clearcutted places. That is all.
