Strahan of the Dead - Behind the Scenes

by Aaron LaRocque
Nov 4, 2011 at 11:47

We've had a lot of questions about how we pulled off some of the scenes in the short film, "Strahan of the Dead". In this video, we reveal scene by scene how the project was executed and how we put our $35 budget to use.

This was one of the funnest projects I've ever made. Hands down. I've always loved zombie movies and when Strahan brought up the idea to do a zombie video, ideas started flying. One of the hardest parts of this project was deciding which ideas to keep and which to scrap.

So good to see how much work actually went into this. Huge props. It's amazing how well you used what you had (which was very little) to produce something so professional!

The first news audio is some Australian lass.

Awesome edit and really neat to see some behind the scenes stuff of the shoot! Was the Zombie walk everywhere because it was here in Melbourne and Sydney on the same day . . . braaaiiinnnssss ?

flag larock Plus (Nov 4, 2011 at 14:51)
yep, the big expense was the zombie mask which cost about $20, the rest was just buying ketchup, water balloons, some cheap fake blood ingredients and a few $1 t-shirts to wreck from the thrift store!

And you obviously didn't take the cost of fuel into consideration, or vehicle maintenance. I know every time I have to flee a Zombie scene I floor it thus increasing maximum damage to any zombies in the way . . . . but also increasing gas consumption . . . .

I find you're $35 budget very unjust!

(Scratches head, maybe it was a hybrid!??!)

flag larock Plus (Nov 5, 2011 at 18:30)
Ok ok, you got me. With fuel costs I'd estimate we were up around $75 total production costs.

Genuine story telling, mixed with action sports, this is truly an art form and the way forward. The video world is full of slow mo dirt spraying cornering shots, blurred out shallow depth of field bark to rider shots. It is so refreshing to see someone branch off and integrate a story into some riding action. Well done guys, huge props. As a film maker myself it is hard to want to go the extra mile without being paid for your efforts, but you have excelled.

flag larock Plus (Nov 6, 2011 at 20:40)
it was just someone lying on the ground, the guts he was "eating" were just nylons or something stuff with cotton or something and then slathered in fake blood.
